Only 30 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and situated right between Tallahassee and Pensacola, Holmes County is a beautiful area to call home. The area is friendly and steeped in southern hospitality all the while offering affordable real estate and residential homes. Background
Holmes County was named for Thomas J. Holmes who settled in the area in 1830. Holmes County was actually created in 1848.
The 2000 census recorded 18,564 people and 6921 households. There were a total of 4,893 families calling the county home. There was an average density of 17 people per square mile in 7,998 housing units.
Of the 6,921 households almost 31 percent of them had children 18 or under. There were 55.6 percent of married couples making a home together and 29.3 percent were non-families. A female head of household with no husband in the home represented 10.8 percent. There were 12.4 percent of households with someone 65 or older living there. The average family size was 2.92 and the average household size was 2.43.
The population was spread out with individuals 18 and under making up 23.10 percent, 18 to 24 year olds making up 8.8 percent, 25 to 44 year olds making up 29.3 percent, 45 to 64 year olds making up 24 percent, and 14.8 percent were 65 or older. The Holmes County median age was 38. There were 112.9 males for every 100 females and 113.6 males for every 100 females over 18. The county’s median household income was $27,923 and the family median income was $34, 286. Females had a median income of $19,991 and males $25,982.
Activities
Holmes County has plenty of water activities to enjoy thanks to the many springs, creeks, lakes, and rivers in the county! Those who like to fish, boat, camp, swim, scuba dive, canoe, picnic, ride horses, and even hike will find there are ample opportunities to do so in Holmes County, Florida. The land here is home to duck, deer, wild turkey, and other small game that makes it prime hunting grounds, too.
Those who love golf will find plenty of great courses like the Dogwood Lakes Country Club that is just north of Bonifay. This championship course had two manmade lakes that provides plenty water hazards. Those owning residential homes in and around the club will enjoy tennis courts as well as a public swimming pool. There are many other recreational facilities, too.
Those who love the beach will find living in Holmes County especially appealing because real estate is affordable and the beach is only 45 minutes away. There is also the Ponce de Leon Springs Recreation Area that has cold and crystal clear water from a natural spring.
