Washington County is in rural northwest Florida and is comprised of approximately 391,040 acres. There are 374,592 acres of land and 16,448 that are fresh water. The population of Washington County is around 21,000. The county is close to many popular tourist destinations like Panama City, which is about 50 miles south. This makes real estate a great investment in this county. It is about halfway between Tallahassee and Pensacola.
History
Those who own land in Washington County, Florida, are frequently unaware of its
history. However, it is quite interesting to know how the county developed
before residential homes began popping up. The county was named after George
Washington and created in 1825. Although it was much larger then, the county
still takes up a large section of the Panhandle. The homes of Spanish, Native
American, and the English have all been made in Washington County, giving this
area a special mixture of cultural influences.
Those looking for political and economic freedom first settled the area due the
mineral resources and vast timber. Development of the area was increased in the
late 1800s when railroads made their appearance. Over the years Washington
County has grown in population while maintaining a strong connection to its
roots.
Transportation
Washington County is served by State Roads 77, 79, 20, and US 90 as well as
I-10. The county seat is Chipley and there are four other counties that border
Washington County. These include Bay County, Walton County, Holmes County, and
Jackson County. Amtrak service is provided by the CSX Railroad System, which
runs through Chipley. Service is provided to Pensacola to the west and
Jacksonville to the easy.
Commercial air service is provided by the Panama City-Bay County Airport in
addition to Dothan Municipal Airport. Small terminal facilities are provided by
the Tri-County Airport.
Population
Most of the population of Washington County resides near or in Ebro, Chipley,
Sunny Hills Vernon, Caryville, Wausau, and some of the other areas near the many
lakes in the county. Population in 2007 was 22,886 with 7,931 households.
Climate
The average temperature is 66 degrees Fahrenheit and the climate is subtropical
and humid. July has a max average temperature of 91 degrees Fahrenheit while
January has a minimum average temperate of 42 degrees Fahrenheit. There is an
average of 71 inches per year of rainfall.
Activities
Since Washington Count is centrally located there are many activities and points
of interests for residents. Its location in the Florida panhandle allows for
shopping, dining, recreation, and other extracurricular activities. There are
many parks and other recreational areas in Washington County.
Of the more than 20,000 people who choose to call Washington County home the
vast majority of them are proud of it and would have it any other way. The real
